JOSIE BEACH SEXTON

About me.

Josie is short for Jocelyn. Beach is my mother's maiden name. In Britain sextons used to look after the church by ringing bells, or digging graves or even striking sleeping children. We're actually Jewish, and I was born in Ohio. I have a dual degree in Spanish linguistics and international relations. By training, I am a digital and print journalist, covering food and drink trends, the craft beer and restaurant industries and international as well as domestic travel.

My work has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, Sunset, 5280, Eater and The Coloradoan, as well as on NPR.org. I write both longform stories and quick content, news pieces and personal essays. Currently I am based in Denver where I report daily for The Denver Post.

Prior to moving West, I took a teaching grant in the Mediterranean and spent a few years there eating pork, muddling three languages and once or twice getting into tiffs with the Spanish government. Since that's settled, I've been spending my free time studying English literature at Oxford University and Middlebury College. I've also created pop-up dinner series and dabbled in photography. On occasion I have been asked to weigh-in on coffee, food and facial hair competitions, and to curate The Passport Program. I am always interested in culture and travel reporting through freelance opportunities or permanent positions.
